from ballads to blank verse and sonnets to slams

This event has now finished.

From ballads to blank verse and sonnets to slam battles, this event will explore how we take poetry from the page and bring it to life through performance and discussion. Curated by leading poetry society Live Canon, each week offers a platform to guests from different parts of the verse world to come together and share their work in an exciting and enlightening way.

with Richard Scott, Tessa Foley and Nick Makoha

Fittingly, we open our poetry season with Richard Scott, reading from his debut collection Soho, shortlisted for the 2018 T.S. Eliot Prize. “If you ever get the chance to see Richard Scott read live, jump on that opportunity ASAP.” (Marie Claire)

Tessa Foley‘s work explores feminism, sexuality and the rejection of normalcy. Her debut poetry collection ‘Chalet Between Thick Ears’ was published and launched by Live Cannon in November 2018 and has inspired a series of Live Canon films. She recently published ‘Garden’ illustrated by her sister, Anna Foley, to raise money for the Portsmouth Abuse and Rape Counselling Service where she volunteered for three years.

Nick Makoha’s  debut ‘Kingdom of Gravity’ was shortlisted  for the 2017 Felix Dennis Prize for Best First Collection and nominated by The Guardian as one of the best books of 2017. He won the 2015 Brunel International African Poetry prize.
